Swadlincote
About Swadlincote
The town of Swadlincote, in the South West corner of Derbyshire, is positioned close to the Leicestershire and Staffordshire borders, and is the largest in South Derbyshire. Its positioning makes for a good place from which to explore the lower end of the region. Swadlincote is also the home of the National Forest Millennium Centre.
Swadlincote is a relatively new town that first became established in the early 19th century. The town has industrial beginnings and historical connections with the coal mining, pottery and brick-making industries, which were later replaced in the 20th century by engineering and manufacturing businesses.
The town has its own dry ski-slope, a good shopping centre and the surrounding area which were once mostly slag heaps from the collieries have now been landscaped to from an attractive surround to the town itself.
